Ali Farka Touré & Toumani Diabaté – “Debe live at Bozar”
Early in my ethnomusicology training, I was introduced to the Kora. Played in this video by Toumani, the Kora is a 21 string harp-like instrument from West Africa. Typically, men called jalis play the instrument. The jali tradition is essentially in place for historical preservation of culture. The jali must know the history, poetry, music, and parables of his people. Think of him as the resident scholar of the culture. The music is quite wonderful as well.
