“Of the Limitless Sky, It Is Everyone” (Original Work for Woodwind Quintet)
This piece is the result of one of two “modules” I was required to complete for my individual instruction composition course at UCLA. The parameters for the work were to focus on polymodality, complex rhythms, and other ideas. This was a challenging work for me to write as I had absolutely no experience with Woodwind Quintets; they simply were ensembles I chose not to write for. My professor (James Newton) wanted me to draw influence from composers such as Villa-Lobos, Brahms, and Mozart. The title comes from one of my favorite Buddhist teachers,Soto Zen founder Dogen Zenji, as I really believe his unique view of the world sets the tone for what is in many ways a unique work. I poured many, many hours into this, and I hope you receive it well.
