music is life, music is breath, music is us

On this Monday’s Memorial Day

Any holiday involving the troops is personal for me, as I mentioned before my maternal great-grandfathers were infantry in WWI (arguably the closest to hell anyone can get), my great-uncle was a minesweeper and my great-great-uncle was in the army and was there when Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941. Memorial day is, as it says, a memorial. War is rarely just, and the wounds both emotionally and physically to soldiers and civilians are often great. Death is the inevitable for all of us, but to think of being killed in combat is a horrifying way to go (in my opinion). So these lyrics, in this song, this memorial day, make the most sense to me:

One by one they all fall down
Try to catch them when they hit the ground

I’m off to face my future
I’m off to face the war
How long must I stay here without you?
How long must I stay here alone?

I will fight for something that I do believe in
But I believe there’s nothing here worth fighting for
The war makes no mistakes
Your heart is going to break
But I’ll be there to catch you when you fall
(When you fall)

I’m off to face the reaper
(I’m off to face the reaper)
I’m off to face the dead
(I’m off to face the dead)
How long must I stay here with these falling shells around me?
How long must I stay here in hell?

I will fight for something that I do believe in
But I believe there’s nothing here worth fighting for
The war makes no mistakes
Your heart is going to break
But I’ll be there to catch you when you fall
The war makes no mistakes
Yeah, your heart is going to break
But I’ll be there to catch you when you fall
(When you fall)

One by one they all fall down
Try to catch them when they hit the ground

One by one they all fall down
Try to catch them when they hit the ground

The war makes no mistakes
Your heart is going to break
But I’ll be there to catch you when you fall
The war makes no mistakes
Your heart is going to break
But I’ll be there to catch you when you fall
(But I’ll be there to catch you when you fall)
But I’ll be there to catch you when you fall
(When you fall)

One by one they all fall down
Try to catch them when they hit the ground

One by one they all fall down
Try to catch them when they hit the ground
